The shoulder is where the grain is tightest. It's the part of the hide that stretches least and wears best. Most bag makers cut it and sell the rest as scrap. We cut the collar from it too.

plastic. Solid brass buckle, brass D-ring, linen thread. All of it fixable.

The bag and the collar age together.

Same hide, same sun, same rain. In two years they're the same colour, and it isn't the colour they started. That's the point of vegetable tan, and the reason we don't sell anything that stays new.

Goods

Three things for the dog.

Collar, lead, mat. Cut after the bag, from the same shoulder. The bags are on the other site. These are the good bits.

Collar · 3.2 mm · brass buckleThe collarFive sizes, or your dog's neck to the millimetre

Two layers, saddle-stitched, edges burnished. Stamped with the hide number, so you can match the bag.

Lead · 1.2 m · brass trigger clipThe leadOne length, one width, the loop shaped to a hand

Thick enough to stop a big dog, soft enough to hold for an hour. Gets better the more it's pulled.

Wipes clean, doesn't curl, sits under two bowls. The only thing we make from the belly.

The leather

What we mean by the same.

Five things that are true of the bag and true of the collar. If a maker won't tell you these, it isn't the same.

A coiled leather lead with a brass clip lying on weathered wood
Tan
Vegetable, twelve weeksOak and chestnut bark in pits, not chrome in a drum. Slower, dearer, and the reason it darkens.
Cut
Shoulder, with the grainThe collar's length runs along the hide's grain so it stretches evenly and never cracks at the buckle.
Stitch
Saddle, by hand, linenTwo needles, one thread, seven to the inch. If one stitch goes, the rest hold. Machines can't do that.
Edge
Burnished, not paintedBevelled, sanded, rubbed with gum and a bone folder until it shines. Paint chips. This doesn't.
Fix
Repairable, foreverNew buckle, new stitch, new D-ring. Send it back with the dog's name and it comes back the same colour.
Measure

Measure your dog.

Neck, two fingers under the tape, and the dog's name. We'll send the size, or cut to the number if it's between sizes, which it usually is. Bag owners: tell us the hide number and we'll cut from the same one.
