Repair older than the house.

Copper, slate, lead. Mended, not replaced. Patina left alone for forty years.Heritage roofing for buildings that were here before us and will be here after. A repair should outlast the wall it sits on, and it should look like it was always there.

What we stand on.

1710

the oldest roof we've repaired. Slate, on a chapel, still on. Some of the slates are the originals.

3

trades under one roof. Copper, slate, lead. Nobody sub-contracted, nobody learning on your roof.

120 yr

the life of copper laid properly. Longer than the joists. We check the joists.

roofs replaced that could be repaired. If we say it's a repair, it's a repair. If we say replace, ask why.

Repair older than the house.

The patch should outlive the building. That means the same metal, the same slate from the same quarry if it's still open, and lead that's been on a roof before. New material is the last resort, not the first quote.

Trades

Three trades, one ladder.

Copper for the long bits, slate for the pitched bits, lead for everything that has to bend. Each has its own bench, its own tools, its own person.

Copper · standing seam · 0.6 mmCopperSpires, domes, dormers, gutters that will outlast the building

Laid with the seams the old way, folded twice, no sealant. Left bright. It'll go green on its own schedule.

From £380/m² · laid
Slate · Welsh, Cumbrian, reclaimedSlateRe-laying, patching, matching what's already up there

We keep a yard of reclaimed slate sorted by quarry and thickness. A patch should be invisible from the road.

From £140/m² · re-laid
Lead · Code 5 to 8 · welded or bossedLeadFlashings, valleys, parapets, the places water thinks about

Bossed by hand where the old lead was bossed. Welded where it needs to be. Never mastic. Ever.

Survey

What a roof survey looks at.

Half a day up a ladder with a notebook and a camera. You get the notebook. Here's what's in it.

Verdigris copper surface, mottled turquoise and rust
01
What it's made ofCopper gauge, slate quarry, lead code. Half of what's wrong with a roof is somebody using the wrong one.
02
Where the water goesValleys, gutters, abutments. Water always finds the lazy detail. We find it first.
03
What's under itBattens, sarking, joists. A roof is only as good as the timber. We lift a slate and look.
04
Repair or replace, and whyWritten down, with photographs. If it's replace, it says what we tried to save and couldn't.
05
The price, and the yearNot just what it costs. When it will need looking at again. Usually a number with a two in front of it.
